Warwick Remembers: 100 years on from the Somme

Wreaths were laid and a silence was held during a service in Warwick on Friday to mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme.

The major battle during the First World War in which tens of thousands of soldiers were killed or injured was remembered with events across the country.

British casualties on the first day numbered over 57,000, of which 19,240 were killed making it the bloodiest day in the country’s military history.

More than one million men from all sides were killed, wounded or captured.

The Warwick service was conducted by Mike Valence, chairman of the town’s Royal British Legion branch.
