An appreciation for the cancer treatment received by his mother-in-law has inspired a Warwick man to cycle 300 miles for charity.

Andy Reeves, 34, who grew up in Warwick and works at Jaguar Land Rover, will take on the London to Paris cycle at the end August to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which funds treatments at the hospital in London of the same name.

He and his wife Jo have been regularly travelling to the hospital to support Jo’s mum Julie, who started receiving treatment for breast cancer there a year ago and is currently taking part in a trial of one of a new treatment.

Jo said: “So far we have seen some pleasing results. At the start of the trial, she had to stay overnight at the hospital and she had to go down to London once a week. After a month, this reduced and she now has to go once every three weeks.

“Andy hasn’t done a ride as big as London to Paris, but he has taken part in the Myton Hospice 50km ride and some of the local organised rides within the area. He has been a keen cyclist for the last five to six years, going out at least once a week, but he stepped his training up in November last year.”

Andy, who used to represent Leamington Cycle and Athletics club and has performed high jump and hurdles at county and regional levels, said: “It is going to be a big challenge, but the rewards of completing the ride will outweigh the difficulty and pain. I know it is going to be hard and very physically challenging, but I am excited and I have seen first-hand how the money I am raising will be used to help others.”

Jo will see him off in London on August 31 and she and Julie are planning to travel to Paris to cheer him over the finish line on September 3.
