Town farewell to former mayor and mayoress

TRIBUTES have flooded in for a much loved former Kenilworth mayor and mayoress who will share a funeral service after passing away just weeks apart.
Jack and Muriel Bastock will be waved off at a funeral service at 12noon in St Nichols church on Tuesday January 15, where all are welcome to bid farewell to the much loved and highly respected couple.
Jack Bastock, who was born on Albion Street in 1923 died in December aged 89. His wife Muriel passed away on January 4.
The pair were married for 40 years and always heavily involved in town life.
After marrying Muriel who encouraged him to stand for town council, Jack spend 28 years helping the town and stood twice as mayor in 1985 and 1993. He also served on Warwick District Council for 18 years as a “strongly committed Liberal” and then Liberal Democrat.

Jack’s main interests lay in planning and housing and he had a real influence in the council for his tireless efforts and devotion to Kenilworth and its people.
He was a charter member of the Lions Club for 25 years sand long standing trustee of Kenilworth United Charities.
Jack and Muriel were founding members of the town’s twinning links with Bourg-la-Reine over 30 years ago and the group’s French chairman, Guy Reppelin is expected to attend the funeral.
Sheila Skinner, chair of the twinning association, said: “Jack worked hard to establish twinning with Bourg-la-Reine and Muriel was an active chairman for several years. They will both be missed in the association and in the community.”
Ann Blacklock, friend and colleague of Mr BAstock, said it was “very sad” for the town to lose two such loved and respected members of the community.
At their last meeting town councillors paid tribute to the former mayor, with Cllr Michael Coker saying: “It is extremely sad news, Jack Bastock was my opponent on Abbey Ward and I always thought highly of him.
“He worked hard for all causes and could be proud of the work he did for the town. He will be greatly missed.”
Cllr Richard Davies said: “Jack Bastock belonged to the ‘putting Kenilworth First Party’ as far as I am concerned, and that’s my highest accolade to any councillor.”
