Sexton's namesake house is 'up there with OBE'

Former Manchester United, Chelsea and Coventry City manager Dave Sexton has described having a building in Kenilworth named after him as "a true honour".

Mr Sexton has lived in the town for almost 30 years and his achievements have been marked by the developer currently transforming Talisman Square.

Discovery Properties has completed the first phase of its 25million redevelopment and marked the occasion by naming one of the main buildings after the 78-year-old.

The building on the southern side of Talisman Square has been named Sexton House in Mr Sexton’s honour.

Hugo Hawkings, of Discovery Properties, said: “Dave is a massively admired figure in British football who has had roles at all levels of the game.

“People know him as a former manager of Chelsea, Manchester United and Coventry, but he was also a very influential figure at the Football Association where he was assistant England manager and also manager to the under-21 side.

“He is a very quiet, humble man and we just thought it was important that his time in the town should be marked for all time. It was great to meet him and it was nice to see he had brought his family along for the occasion.”

Mr Sexton, who has three children and eight grandchildren, moved to Kenilworth when he was manager at Highfield Road in the 80s.

He said: “This is the first building I’ve had named after me and for it to be in Kenilworth is a true honour. It’s very nice to be remembered on your doorstep.

“I was awarded an OBE a few years ago and this is equal to that in terms of being proud. It’s a lovely moment for me and my family.”

The first phase of Talisman Square has seen a facelift for the southern side and also includes a new canopy, repaving, shop extensions and new lighting.

As part of the scheme, a new entrance to Talisman from the car park has been created with new shop units flanking the link with the new Waitrose food store.
