MANDIP Sehmi remains confident of winning a Paralympic medal with Great Britain’s wheelchair rugby team despite the defeat to the USA in their opening game today (Wednesday).

GB went down 56-44, despite leading 13-11, in the first quarter and will now aim to win against France tomorrow and Japan on Friday to progress from the group stages.

Speaking after the defeat Sehmi, 31 and from Warwick, said: “We started well but it just didn’t go our way today.

“We can’t worry about it we just need to focus on our next two games.

“I firmly believe we will play the USA again in the final.”

Sehmi said he was amazed by the level of support shown to the team by the mainly British crowd and said this could be an advantage in the team’s forthcoming games.

He added: “They’re like an extra man on the floor, I can’t imagine what it’s like for the opposition.

“We‘ve worked so hard to get to this point and I firmly believe this team is going to get a medal.”
