Price hike plans at new allotments slammed
A PROPOSED 40 per cent rise in rent for Kenilworth’s Beehive Hill allotment plots has been slammed by councillors.
The 26 plots are now in use after a long battle by the town council to get the land and a lease from Warwick District Council. And unhappy members are now already arguing against a proposed 40 per cent rise in rent.
The plots are currently leased by the town council for £250 per year. But proposals by the district could see this figure increase by £100 in what members are saying is simply too high too soon.
Speaking at their last meeting, Cllr Felicity Bunker said: “I’m not very happy, as it seems it has been a very hard slog to get here and a bit much for them to up the rent already in this short time.”
Cllr Michael Coker said they still need to look at the 180-strong waiting list for a plot in the town.
But Cllr Pat Ryan said they had to be careful about taking up all open spaces and leaving “very little land” for activities such as dog walking. Members referred the matter to the finance committee with an objection at the £350 fee and suggestion that it be a maximum of £300 per year if an increase was absolutely necessary.
