New house at Wantage would be ‘dangerous’
A NEW house planned for the grounds of The Wantage faces more opposition after town council planners branded it a dangerous precedent for the historic land.
Members discussed the application at their last planning meeting and have now formally objected to the build on grounds that it will be detrimental to the conservation area and newly listed gardens, will set a precedent for the rest of the site that it is not sympathetic to surrounding properties.
Councillor Pat Ryan (Lib Dem, Abbey) said the two plots of land should not be any less protected under the listed status given to the Grade II property simply becuase they are separate from the main house.
He said: “This application is crucial if the argument that building a house in a piece of land separate from the main building does not come under protection.”
“If this is allowed then that opens up two thirds of the grounds as eligible for building, going right down to the edge of Abbey Fields and is a very dangerous application in that respect.”
The final decision for the proposed family house on Plot 12, to the side of the main building, will be made by Warwick District Council.
