MP Jeremy ‘excited’ to begin role at Ministry of Justice

KENILWORTH and Southam’s MP is settling into a top position at the Ministry of Justice after being appointed as part of a major government reorganisation.

Jeremy Wright is now Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the ministry with responsibility for the prison service, probation, rehabilitation, the criminal justice system and sentencing.

And with his background in law, the former criminal barrister said he is looking forward to getting to grips with the new position.

He said: “It means a lot of extra responsibility but I welcome it and am very honoured to have been asked to take it up. The Prime Minister took me to Downing Street and invited me to join the Ministry of Justice which of course I was very excited to accept.

He added: “I am very busy but it is very interesting and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with it.”

Mr Wright was a Conservative party whip for around two and a half years and so is no stranger to the Government - but is now looking forward to the chance to revisit the legal world.

He said: “I am very passionate about law and this gives me the chance to look at it from another angle..

“I am spending a lot of time looking back at legal issues and reminding myself of legal issues, which I am really enjoying.”

He is also looking forward to being able to raise issues in the Chamber - something he was not able to do as a whip but which he is sure the people at home will welcome to get their voices heard.

And he has assured from the start that his constituents will remain his “top priority”.

“I would never accept any position which would affect my constituents or my ability to represent them in Parliament,” he said.

“Obviously in these first weeks I will be in London more often, but after that I hope there will be no difference in the amount of time I spend away. My constituency is top priority as it has always been.”
