AN attacker who stabbed a man in the head at a Leamington takeaway has been jailed for five years.

Nineteen-year-old Arronjit Singh Colar of Rugby was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court in Leamington today (Friday) after being found guilty of wounding with intent and possessing a knife, blade or sharp pointed article in a public place.

He had pleaded guilt at an earlier hearing in December.

The incident occurred at Viallis in Victoria Terracein the early hours of September 19 last year, when it is believed a group of five people had been arguing with staff at the restaurant. The group turned their attention to a man in his 30s and his friend and, during an altercation, the man was stabbed in the head with an unknown instrument.

The man was treated by ambulance staff and taken to Warwick Hospital for treatment to a five-inch gash to the top of his head.

The five people got into a taxi following the incident and during the investigation that followed, officers appealed for information to identify them and the offender who carried out the assault.

But Colar was identified the next day by a safer neighbourhood officer who recognised him after seeing a clear image taken from CCTV at the restaurant.

He was arrested on September 20 following questioning, was charged the next day and held in custody in Nuneaton, where he appeared in magistrates court and on the following day.

Investigating officer Det Sgt Carl Buckley said: “This was a particularly vicious assault as Colar can be seen on CCTV reaching over other people to stab the male in the head.

“We were delighted to arrest Colar so soon after the assault and to be able to quickly reassure the public that he was remanded in custody. He has been in prison since his arrest where he will now serve the remainder of his sentence.

“We will continue to work closely with licensed premises and CCTV operators throughout Warwickshire to arrest anyone suspected of committing violence in Warwickshire so that the majority of law abiding citizens can enjoy a safe night out.“
