Independents help pull visitors to town centre

KENILWORTH’S range of independent shops has helped the town buck the national trend in falling shopper numbers.

Figures released show that the number of shoppers and visitors in the town centre rose by seven per cent.

Whereas nationally, the average of town centre shopping visitors fell by five per cent.

And to encourage more visitors, Kenilworth will play host to its first food festival, called Foodie Fortnight.

The figures for June come from the Town Centre Partnership, which includes the district and county councils, the town’s chamber of trade and Kenilworth Town Council.

Jane Poulter, of the chamber of trade, said: “Kenilworth has a thriving business community and a large number of people who are passionate about promoting the town.

“Our range of independent shops offers consumers a unique shopping experience which is missing from many other High Streets where the big national chains dominate.

“Kenilworth does seem to have a special sense of community and perhaps this, combined with our wonderful shops and restaurants, is the reason behind the town’s footfall figures going against the national trend.

“Kenilworth also seems to attract visitors from outside, and with English Heritage starting a bus shuttle service from the town to Kenilworth Castle, this also encourages tourists to discover just what Kenilworth has to offer.”

The businesswoman, who is a partner in Jam Creative Marketing, added: “The Kenilworth Chamber of Trade works hard to promote and support Kenilworth businesses.”

The food festival runs from September 30 until October 13.

Restaurants, bars, cafes and food retailers are being encouraged to take part and some have devised special menus and will be running discount offers, with the possibility of a Taste Trail, similar to Leamington’s food festival.

Highlights also include a Sunday market in Abbey End, with live music, stalls and entertainment, beer and food tasting in old High Street and a grow-your-own market and wine tasting in Talisman Square.
