Hospital shows students merci
When two coaches of French exchange students turned up at Warwick Hospital this week, little did medical staff know that it would lead to a large-scale operation involving the Red Cross.
About a third of the 90 youngsters on board were suffering from sickness on Tuesday night. So the A&E team got to work. Four had to be taken to the children’s ward, while supplies and blankets were given to the remaining students on the coach.
But it didn’t end there.
An hour later, a hazardous area response team was sent from the West Midlands Ambulance Service , including a trauma doctor and three senior paramedic officers.
And then the Red Cross turned up and provided 90 camp beds and bedding.
A spokesperson for the hospital said: “With this excellent support from West Midlands Ambulance Service, the British Red Cross, Health Protection Agency, Public Health and our external suppliers G4S we were able to provide food, support and accommodation for the unaffected students and an area away from the main hospital building for the ones with symptoms. All of the affected students improved overnight and have since left the hospital to continue their holiday.”
Chief executive Glen Burley said “I would like to take this opportunity to offer a big thank you to all of our staff, together with the other services who provided help and support to our trust during this difficult time.”
