Holst and all that jazz at Warwickshire Sax and Clarinet Day

THE first Warwickshire Saxophone and Clarinet Day held at King’s High School in Warwick was hailed a great success by the organisers.

Some 40 players of all ages and abilities had the opportunity to take part in ensemble rehearsals, workshops, specialist clinics and talks about the instruments.

Tutor Mike Hall, who teaches jazz studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, said: “The players also experimented with improvisation, accompanied by musicians from Warwick Boys School.

“We ended with a finale concert at which the icing on the cake was a triumphant rendition of Mars from Holst’s Planets Suite.”

The event, which was open to players of all abilities, now looks set to become an annual date on the calendar at the independent Warwick girls’ school.
