Help needed for stranded student

A DESPERATE student is calling for help after being left completely stranded when his wheelchair broke and he was left to find up to £5,000 for a replacement.

Kurt Shead suffers from cerebral palsy and relies heavily on an electric wheelchair for his independence. But is now stranded after the chair he relies upon so heavily stopped working.

Kurt, who bought the chair with help from the charity, Whizz Kidz, when he was 17, said as an adult, there are simply no services to support him and he is now unable to leave the house or attend college.

“I am really struggling and I don’t know what to do,” he said.

“My chair is like my legs and without it I am just stuck. But this is a huge amount of money which neither me or my family have, and there is no help available to me as I am over 18.”

The 20-year-old student is currently studying for his A-Levels and hopes to go on to study English at Oxford University.

But he said it is all hanging in the balance as is now completely stuck and not eligible for help for the chair to be fixed on the NHS.

As the owner of the chair, he needs to pay up to £2,000 for it to be fixed or spend several months on a hospital waiting list for a replacement - which he says will be less suitable for his needs.

Kurt is making a desperate plea for help i the town so he can have his chair fixed and continue with his life. Anyone who feels they can help in any way can contact the Weekly News for details to be passed on.
