KENILWORTH could be in line for millions of pounds to reopen its railway station with a funding bid expected to be considered over the next month.

Transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin has announced £20million will go towards building rail services in smaller towns and Kenilworth is understood to be at the top of the list for consideration.

Warwickshire District Council announced earlier in January that they had a bid for funding to fund the new station on Priory Road ready to submit as soon as the scheme was opened by the government.

Cllr Peter Butlin, portfolio holder for transport, said: “The county council is currently preparing to submit a bid for Government funding to build Kenilworth station. The scheme is ‘shovel ready’, meaning we are in a position to deliver the station project if we are successful with the bid.”

The new stations fund is targeted at ‘shovel ready’ projects which can be delivered quickly and local authorities must submit bids by February 25th.

Proposals must be at an advanced stage and supported by Network rail and other relevant organisations. Applications will be reviewed by a cross-industry panel, with successful applicants expected to provide some funding themselves.
