A DETERMINED Kenilworth quartet have already smashed their fund-raising target of £4,000 despite being just halfway through a mammoth challenge of cycling over 1,000 miles across the UK.
Andy Davies, Simon Lilley, Peter Whiting and Ken Leonard set off on the gruelling challenge to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats on Saturday in hope of raising £4,160 for Myton Hospices.
And thanks to amazing fund-raising efforts and local support, the four friends who all met through the Kenilworth Tennis and Squash Club, have already collected a whopping £4,500.
Peter Whiting, who has been training with the group since late last year, said they hope to make it across the country in just 12 days -setting them a pace of around 80 miles each day despite none of them having attempted such a feat before.
“We wanted to raise as much money as possible for Myton Hospices as it is a very important charity,” he said. “We all keep fit but we are not cyclists so this is a real challenge. At first we thought we could raise £1 per mile but then we thought why not try and raise £1,000 each to really make it something special for Myton Hospices.”
Sara Revell from Myton’s fundraising team said: “This is a fantastic achievement and we would like to say a big thank you to the cyclists, their support crew and all their sponsors.”
The friends hope to arrive at John O’Groats next Friday. Before they set off they held a raffle to celebrate the birthday of rider, Ken and 30 years of nursing care by Myton Hospices which brought in an extra £200 for the kitty. They have also thanked all the businesses which provided donations, kit and advice. To make a donation, visit www.mytonhospice.org or send a cheque payable to ‘The Myton Hospices’ to LEJOG Challenfe, c/o Kenilworth Tennis Club.
