Civic reception to celebrate county’s contribution to London Olympics
on day 6 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games at ExCel on September 4, 2012 in London, England.
A SPECIAL civic reception is being planned to celebrate Warwickshire’s London 2012 heroes.
Warwickshire County Council is inviting Warwickshire Olympians, Paralympians, Olympic Relay torchbearers and people who made an effort to make London 2012 a success, to Shire Hall later this year to mark their contribution to the games.
Warwickshire basked in the glow of the Olympic Flame during days 44 and 45 of its journey to Danny Boyle’s spectacular opening ceremony and 157 torchbearers carried the torch around the county. Those who did not have commercial sponsorship had their torches bought for them by the county council as a legacy pledge to take them into their communities.
There were many volunteers and people who also worked with the Games organisers to ensure that the Torch Relay and full benefit of the 2012 Olympics was felt in the county.
The Olympians and Paralympians from Leamington and Warwick include medal-winning boccia star Nigel Murray, table tennis player Kelly Sibley, archer Naomi Folkard and wheelchair rugby player Mandip Sehmi.

Cllr Alan Farnell, leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: “As the embers of the cauldron smoulder in the Olympic Stadium, now is the time to ensure that we continue the momentum of a memorable summer.
“This includes hosting an event to celebrate the achievements of the Warwickshire people who helped make London 2012 ‘the glorious games’.
“The reception will be held in honour of those who played their part, whether behind the scenes as volunteers, or as Olympians or Paralympians, to showcase Britain at its best.”
