Charity applauds Pcso’s commitment

DEDICATING time to showing young drivers how to stay safe on the roads has earned a Whitnash police community support officer national recognition.

Sharron Underwood was nominated for an award for her commitment to the road safety charity Brake and was invited to attend a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament last week.

Since taking part in Brake’s 2young2die training course four years ago, Pcso Underwood has led presentations to more than 1,000 students at Warwickshire College’s Trident Technology and Business Centre on the dangers associated with driving and what they can do to keep themselves safe, tailoring the presentations to suit different audiences at seminars, workshops and one-to-one sessions. And last year she was running one-to-one sessions with young men who had been convicted of driving offences and referred to her through the county’s youth justice service.

Psco Underwood’s sergeant and inspector have been so impressed with the success of her road safety presentations that they have asked her to present them as a training programme for all police community schools officers within Warwickshire, including all safer schools officers.

She said: “The 2young2die presentations have been a great success over the past few years and I’ve delivered them in a variety of settings which helps me make them versatile and flexible to the diverse audiences I work with. It’s great that my sergeant and inspector have taken an interest in the work I have been doing at the college and seen how successful it has been.

“The training programme for Pcsos is a really positive development too as it means that many more young drivers will be given road safety advice which will help us to reduce casualties on roads across Warwickshire.”
