Cadets in line for a £340k new home at town school fields

A BRAND new Air Training Corps cadet building could be on the way at Kenilworth School after gaining support across the town.

A planning application for a meeting place to be built at the school fields on Leyes Lane is currently being considered by Warwick District Council.

If approved by the council’s planners over the next few weeks, the 180sq ft brick building will be used to train cadets from across the area in the evenings and at weekends.

The development would cost around £340,000 and is being proposed by the West Midlands Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association which currently operates a base from Balsall Common’s Heart of England School site.

Kevin Andrews, head of estates for the association, said if all goes to plan, the building will be completed by June and provide use for the school when not in use by the cadets.

And he is hoping the new location will help grow numbers and provide another opportunity for young people in Kenilworth.

“We have been looking at an alternative site for some time and this seems like the ideal solution,” he said.

“There is a very positive vibe towards the cadets in the town and we want to grow our presence in Kenilworth”

The group currently has around 40 members, including from Kenilworth, and is heavily involved with activity in the town including the Remembrance Day parade.

Town council planners welcomed the move as “very exciting” for the town and posed no objections to work going ahead.

Cllr George Illingworth, mayor and Royal British Legion branch chairman, said there has not been a cadet unit in the town in living memory other than the Balsall Common members.

“I am very pleased that they have chosen this location and I think it will be very good for us and for our young people,” he added.
