Artist sets out to save the pavilion

Kenilworth’s pavilion could be saved and even transformed into a community art space in the latest ambitious proposal.

As we reported last week, the 90-year-old pavilion on the Abbey Fields bowling is due to be pulled down as part of Warwick District Council’s £120,000 play area revamp.

It was left standing for a bat survey to be carried out, and after suspected droppings were found it may be some time before its future is decided. But town artist and youth worker Tim Robottom has set about trying to save the hut as a children’s arts centre.

Tim’s plans include a space for children to engage with art, which could include the play area, and a white graffiti wall where teenagers can learn about graffiti art in a dedicated place to try to curb vandalism. “We could get visiting artists to work with young people and by having things going on at night with teenagers we can stop them doing what they shouldn’t be doing” he said. He is now seeking support for the plans which Cllr Dave Shilton, the district councillor behind the revamp, said would be considered as part of the whole process.

But he said safety was the most important factor and the option which proved to be in the best interests for the children would come out on top.

“We don’t want any issues of safety or problems here and so whatever option we go with will have to be in the best interests of children,”he said.

“The problem of course for these projects is always funding, but we will see.”
