All go for five years of parking in town centre
TALISMAN Square car park has been given the green light and work will start to create the 44 spaces in the New Year.
Members of Warwick District Council planning committee passed the application by Cobalt Estates Ltd by a ‘narrow majority’ on Tuesday.
But they imposed a time restriction of just five years, meaning that in November 2012, owners will have to revert the land back to use for shops and flats or go back to the council for permission to keep the car park going.
Cllr George Illingworth, planning committee chairman, said there was some concern by members of how untidy the old shop walls will look within the boarded up area and that work will have to be done to ensure safety on the site.
“We are not going to get the shops as planned for now, but this arrangement is only for five years and so we will see what happens after that,” he said.
The shops on the site were demolished to make way for new retail development, but after failing to attract interest, the temporary car park plans came about.
Objections have been raised about safety, the large area of land which will be taken up by the development and disappointment at the lack of new shops on site.
Huge Hawkings, who is behind the plans, said they have not given up on retail development and will look again at attracting businesses to the site in 2017.
