Major changes to the future of Kenilworth have been unveiled.
And the Weekly News can give you an exclusive glimpse into one of the most important documents in the town’s recent history.
The Local Plan, which details where thousands of homes will be built and how jobs will be generated, has taken many years of planning and led to many heated debates.
And after two drafts, today is the day that Warwick District Council’s (WDC’s) final proposals will be made public.
As we predicted, Kenilworth’s allocation of new homes have been increased from 700 to 1,180. And as we previously revealed, there will be big changes to the town’s education. Kenilworth School and its sixth form college will all be moved onto one site near South Crest Farm. And a new primary school will be built somewhere in the town to absorb the growth.
The majority of the 1,180 homes are proposed on the sites which will be vacated by Kenilworth School and Castle Six Form College. The rest will be built on the Thickthorn land to the east of the town. This piece of land is also being earmarked as employment land for new businesses - and WDC hope to bring more sporting and community facilities alongside the new schools and homes.
WDC deputy leader Cllr Les Caborn said: “The Local Plan is much more than just housing. It also brings employment, community facilities and infrastructure. The planners have worked very hard and it has not been an easy journey for them.”
WDC chief executive Chris Elliott said the new developments, alongside the town’s business successes and proposed new station, will help Kenilworth “fly”.
The majority of the proposed 12,900 new homes for the district have been planned in the Warwick and Leamington area, leading many to suggest that Kenilworth ‘has got away with it’.
But WDC said it did consider the detrimental impact of HS2 on the town when they were deciding the location of the developments.
