Car dealer fined over '˜unroadworthy' sale

A Warwick car dealer who described an unroadworthy and potentially dangerous vehicle as 'fabulous' has been fined £2,000.

Rajinder Singh Hayer who lives in Coventry Road, was prosecuted for selling an unsafe car after an undercover trading standards operation last year.

Hayer, trading as Readycar in Millers Road, Warwick pleaded guilty to five charges including to falsely describing a vehicle for sale as being “a fabulous low insurance motor car ready to drive away today”

The 49-year-old was investigates by Warwickshire Trading Standards in November 2015 after ongoing investigations into sales of unroadworthy vehicles.

Officers bought a Hyundai Getz from Readycar which was listed for sale online. After being checked the car was found to have 14 faults including seized brakes, leaking exhaust, suspension and steering problems and the bonnet safety catch was stuck in the open position.

Mr Hayer appeared at Nuneaton Justice Centre on June 21 where he pleaded guilty to five offences under the Road Traffic Act 1991, The General Product Safety Regulations 2005, the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and the Companies Act 2006.

But told the court that he had been trading for 15 years and had never been in trouble with Trading Standards before.

He also promised to improve his paperwork and change his procedures, in consultation with officers following the hearing.

Hayer was fined £2,000, ordered to pay £499.19 costs and a £120 victim surcharge.
