Town has declined over the years

At last! Someone has dared to speak out about the ruination of what was once a pleasant town (KWN letters last week).

When my family first moved here over 45 years ago Talisman Square was just being developed. We watched it become a pleasant area for shopping and also a place where town celebrations could be held. Now it is claustrophoic and virtually useless. When the shops were demolished we were presented with eyesore hoardings and, with the economy as it is, we are likely to be seeing those for years to come.

Yes, with the passing of years, the square had become shabby. However, somebody decided to throw the baby out with the bath-water and demolish rather than refurbish. Dare I suggest that whoever had such grandiose plans for a small, unique town did not live here? Were local citizens asked what they would like ?

I am glad the police station has been put to good use, but I watch with dread in case that corner is developed further. The trees have matured and I have even seen a thrush (a rare bird these days) there. It is a delightful piece of greenery in the town.

Does anyone use that ramp outside the library? It must have cost quite a bit and I cannot see the reason for it. There were no steps to the library and the ramp appears steeper than the already existing slope.

The money spent there could have been used to re-instate the flowers that were in the foyer of the library; I miss them every time I go there.

As for Waitrose: Station Road has now become dangerous. When they get to the Warwick Road end motorists are supposed to turn left. I was nearly run over once by somebody turning the wrong way and I watched another driver last week who also turned right.

Also, when they closed off Bertie Road recently I did wonder how we were supposed to get to the Medical Centre. Some people are unable to walk great distances from the car-park. - Josephine Vannerley, via email.
