Spreading a little light on the matter

Your correspondent S Garrett was correct last week to highlight the dangers of the stepped footbridge across the railway line from Farmer Ward Road to Priory Road.

Ever since the bridge lighting on the Farmer Ward Road side was vandalised and had to be removed a couple of years ago, this bridge has represented a hazard to pedestrians on dark afternoons and evenings especially in the winter months.

I was successful over a year ago in gaining county council funding to replace the bridge lighting, so it has been very frustrating that the works have taken so long to get completed. However, as of a week ago there are now two low-level LED strip lighting arrays illuminating the steps after dark, and when I walked over the bridge on Saturday night they seemed to be working very effectively.

I have referred the other points in the letter, about the state of repair of the steps themselves, to the relevant officer for action. - John Whitehouse, County Councillor, Kenilworth Abbey.
