Spread the load to ease congestion
Anybody who travels from Kenilworth to Leamington on a regular basis will know of the huge delays at certain times of the day which is caused by the sheer volume of traffic on what has been described as the busiest road in Warwickshire.
Incredulously our council wants to add to this misery by building a huge new estate right next to the A452. The congestion is already so great that no amount of superficial tinkering, such as traffic lights on Thickthorn Island, will alleviate this problem.
Previous reports have highlighted the need for more low cost social housing in the area for younger people to be able to afford to live in Kenilworth. By definition, in order to be low cost the density of the housing will have to be high; are the planners really trying to tell us that by associating the layout of Garden Towns and even Northumberland Avenue, the richest street in Leamington, with this project that this is what we will end up with (KWN, May 18)? If so, we must have the wealthiest young people in the country if they can afford those prices.
Cutting away all the spin, the reality is we are told that we need social housing, but it should not be put all in one area which risks creating a ghetto and, even worse, next to a road that cannot cope with its existing traffic let alone a neighbouring additional huge new estate.
Kenilworth deserves better than that. Spread the new housing around the town so it can be more easily integrated into different areas and this would also spread the load over a wider infratructure. - R. Evans, Glasshouse Lane, Kenilworth.
