Lucy, who asked for her full name and picture not to be published, put her father Duncan in the recovery position and performed CPR with her brother and sister-in-law after they found him slumped in his chair. They did this for nine minutes until the ambulance arrived and carried on while the paramedics set up their equipment.

Duncan was then taken to hospital and later underwent a quadruple heart bypass operation. He is now recovering well at home.

Lucy said: “I have always done first aid training as part of my work, but I never thought I would need to use those skills so close to home. I would urge anyone who doesn’t know first aid to get along to a course because you really never know when you might need to put those skills to the test.”

The course takes place at the National Agricultural Centre on August 18, 7pm to 10pm. Places cost £25. Book at www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses/course-search
