Kenilworth pavilion saved for the summer
Kenilworth’s bowling green pavilion has been granted a stay of execution until September when its future will be decided.
District councillors confirmed that for a bat survey to be completed, and ideas to come forward to keep the building standing, it will not be touched until the autumn.
And the race is now on to convince Warwick District Council that it should be saved for the community.
The pavilion is due to be removed to ensure safety in the brand new £120,000 play area for toddlers at Abbey Fields.
And latest proposals to save it come from town residents and historians who want to adapt the 90-year-old hut and replace wooden side panels with glass to fit in with the council’s call for safe open space. It could retain the existing poles and roof.
Campaigner, Peter James, said the hut has suffered almost no graffiti in almost a century and is in almost ideal condition, so to knock it down would be “a crime”.
“The local men who built this pavilion in 1913 fought and possibly died for their country during the First World War and should be saved as a memorial to them,” he said.
Cllr Dave Shilton (Con, Parkhill, portfolio holder behind the demolition, said the council is taking on board all suggestions and will take them into account along with the safety of young children which was his “main priority”.
Work has now started to remove play equipment and the hedge at the back of the pavilion has been dug up.
