The first will be held in Abbey Fields, starting at 9.30am outside the swimming pool on Saturday March 4. The litter-pick will last about an hour and will be followed by tea and coffee. All equipment will be provided.

The Friends of Abbey Fields decided to start their usual programme of litter-picking early to coincide with the national scheme, which aims to ‘bring together people from across the country to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and coastline.’

The Friends usually litter-pick on the first Saturday of every month from April until October.

A statement on the group’s website said: “It is amazing how rewarding it is to clear the Fields of offending litter.

“We are very grateful to all members of the public who collect litter on a regular basis as without their help the Fields would look a sorry sight.”

Another litter-pick will be held on the same day in Guy Road park at 10am, and again will last around an hour. Anyone wishing to join in this event should meet by the park’s play area.
