Angela Scull, the headteacher of St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, bade an emotional farewell to pupils and parents at the end of the school’s Year Six leavers’ assembly last week.

She said: “I’m very proud of my time at St Augustine’s and I’ve seen so many children through their time here.

“There have been hard days but most of the days have been a joy. I think the best bits for me have been helping children and their families come through hard times.

“I will come back for the Christmas and the summer fair.”

During the assembly, she was presented with a bouquet, a copy of the children’s year book and a book of memories from the pupils, which she described as ‘absolutely beautiful’ and prompted her to say she might change her mind about leaving.

Angela, who had been in the teaching profession for 30 years, spoke of her surprise when she landed the role of headteacher in 2006.

She said: “When I first joined the school I did not expect to become the headteacher.

“I thought: ‘do I dare apply for headteacher at that school?’ But God told me: ‘do it, go for it.’”

After the assembly, she said her goodbyes to several parents, pupils and teachers outside the main entrance.

During her ten years at the school, a new classroom for year six and a much larger IT suite which can fit a whole class in have been built.

Exam results have been strong during Angela’s tenure, with pupils’ SATS results being consistently better than the national average and Warwickshire’s average.

The school was rated ‘Good’ after its last Ofsted inspection in November 2014, and has been rated ‘Good’ in two previous inspections with Angela at the helm.

The 2014 Ofsted report stated: “The strong leadership of the headteacher has ensured that the quality of teaching has been sustained during recent staff changes.”

Chair of Governors at St Augustine’s Yvonne Salter-Wright also spoke highly of Angela’s time at the school.

She added: “To Angela, it was all about the children. She’s been an amazing headteacher, and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with her.

Angela now plans to look after her two grandchildren, take up new interests and to go travelling to New Zealand during her retirement. She will now hand over the reins to deputy head Lesley Ritchie.
