Schools in Kenilworth have upped their efforts to become greener.
A number of schools in the area have submitted travel plans to Warwickshire County Council to gain funding to help promote sustainable travel.
Some schools have already received grants.
St Johns Primary School wrote their travel plan in 2006 an
d were awarded £4,970, which they have yet to spend.
Thorns Community Infant School wrote their travel plan in March last year. They were awarded £4,595.
The school has also taken part in Walk to School Week and they have also signed up to the county council’s Walk Once a Week/Walk on Wednesday scheme.
Hannah Collett, sustainable travel officer for Warwickshire County Council, said: “They are currently in the early stages of setting up a walking bus, so they are trying to recruit parent volunteers for this. They have also signed up to our trophy scheme that we are hoping to launch next term. This is an incentive scheme that encourages sustainable forms of travel.”
Kenilworth School has had an approved travel plan in place since 2004 and they were awarded a grant of £13,425. They used the cash to make improvements to the upper school entrance and to make markings and safety hatchings.
Clinton Primary submitted their travel plan in March this year and are waiting approval.
If their travel plan is approved they want to spend their grant on replacing and extending the bike shed and possibly create an additional entrance to the school.
The primary school has also taken part in the county council’s Walk to School Weeks which run in May and October.
Priors Field Primary has just submitted a travel plan and is awaiting approval.
Mrs Collett added: “A parent at the school was really keen to encourage children to cycle to school so they will probably spend the grant money on cycle storage.
“They also want to get a parent waiting shelter. The school is also signed up to our trophy scheme and they have asked to take part in the Walk Once a Week/Walk on Wednesday scheme for the next school year.”
St Augustines primary school has also submitted a travel plan this year and awaits approval.
A preliminary design has been requested for the crossing based on the schools proposed new footpath. The school applied for the walking initiative grant last year for £500, this is to use on a walking incentive scheme.
Mrs Collett concluded: “Kenilworth Nursery plans to get their travel plan done for March 2009. I have yet to work with Park Hill Junior and St Nicholas Primary School.”
