Children at Kenilworth's Priors Field Primary School will be twice as busy growing their own vegetables this year, thanks to a £300 donation.
The money has been raised and donated by The Almanack restaurant and bar in town and the school decided to spend the cash on two new planters to grow extra vegetables.
For every Caesar salad sold at The Almanack, a 25p contribution is made to healthy eating activities in local primary schools, and it is with some of these funds that the Gardening Club at Priors Field Primary has been able to buy the planters.
The school hopes this will encourage more children to gain enjoyment from the 'seed to table' experience.
The Gardening Club, open to all children on a voluntary basis every Friday lunchtime, has planted a range of fruit and vegetables, which will be ready to harvest in the summer and autumn terms.
The crops include strawberries, leeks, broad beans, runner beans, onions, courgettes, cabbage and a variety of squash.
Due to the success of the programme, Veronica Leary at the school has this year been able to enter some of the produce into the schools section of the Kenilworth in Bloom competition.
To complete the cycle and ensure that the produce reaches children's plates, the school cook has agreed to prepare some of the fruits and vegetables for the pupils to eat at lunchtime, while other fresh produce will be cooked within lesson time.
Miss Leary said: "Up until recently we only had two planters in school which restricted the numbers of pupils who could have access to our gardening scheme.
"There is no substitute for practical, hands-on learning and this kind donation from The Almanack has meant that more children can benefit from our planting programme. It also moves us one step closer to our goal of having a planter for each of our seven year groups to own and manage."
Jeremy Kynaston, manager of The Almanack, added: "We're glad we can support the school and help even more of the children to enjoy their gardening activities this year.
"This is a great scheme that really lets the children see how the food reaches their plates – what better way than being able to grow it for themselves then eat it at school? We're really into fresh, seasonal produce here at the pub and we're delighted to be doing our bit to help the children do the same."
The planters will be on display for all to see at Priors Field's Summer Festival tomorrow (Saturday) from 4pm to 10pm, where the club members will be showing off the fruits of their labours, along with other stalls, entertainment and an all-day barbecue.
