A music festival that caused some controversy in the town back in 2008 is to return this weekend.
The Love Music Hate Racism Music festival on Abbey Fields is being organised for tomorrow (Saturday).

As with last year's event, the festival is being organised by a number of Castle Sixth Form students.

Anna Laycock, Sophie Butler, Dawn Ellis, Robyn Dowlen, Lizzy Walker and Joseph Richards, all aged 17, are organising the music-led event that will showcase some of the best musical talent in the area.

As well as up-and-coming musicians there will be speakers, stalls, workshops and activities.

The bands Elmo, Painted By Numbers, Urban Sounds for Uyogo, and Kifaru are in the line-up and promise to provide entertainment while also spreading the message of equality.

Ahead of the 2008 event Mick Cole of The Square in Kenilworth described it as 'inappropriate' and said the organisers were only a front for a bigger operation behind the scenes.

But the young organisers went ahead with their event and the day was deemed a success.

The young organisers hope to mirror that success again this year. One of them, Anna Laycock, said: "Everyone loves music yet sometimes racism can infiltrate music, we intend to use music to celebrate diversity and different cultures and bring a community together.

"People of all ages can come together and celebrate the best of all cultures and we hope to show everyone how racism should not have a place in the UK in 2009."

She added: "Our thought-provoking public speakers will address the most important issues concerning racism in society today and include BRAP, One World Link and Ged Colgan. They are all certain to leave you inspired."

Love Music Hate Racism is a national charity that wants to create a national movement against racism and fascism through the power of music. The aim of the event is to show that young people can make a positive contribution to society and are the ones that can combat racism in the future.

The event runs from 11am until 5pm at Abbey Fields and will also include workshop activities such as yoga, henna tattoos and face painting for children.

Those attending can either bring their own picnic or choose from a selection of food from different cultures on sale.
