Campaigners are pushing for increased protection for one of Kenilworth's most unusual streets.
Residents of Avenue Road have completed a research project and created a brochure which explain why it should be made into a conservation area.

The street dates from 1913 and 1914 and is an early example of 20th century semi-detached housing in wh
ich no two pairs of houses are the same.

There is also no vehicular access between them, which reflects the time when the motor car was not pre-eminent.

Norman Stevens, who put the brochure together, said: "This road is such a unique development and it ought to be a conserved.

"If it is given special status then it will be protected against anyone wanting to make major alterations to their houses.

"This will therefore keep the area's character for many more years."

A review of the Kenilworth Conservation Area, which included a public consultation, was carried out in 2006 and 2007, at which time no representations were made for the inclusion of Avenue Road.

But local authorities are required within the Planning Act 1990 to review this from time to time and to consult publicly where it is felt a new or extended conservation area may be appropriate.

It is anticipated that this consultation can be undertaken within the existing budgetary framework.

Joanna Illingworth, from the Kenilworth Society, said: "We fully support the application and we're very impressed by the amount of research done."

In the brochure residents said: "Kenilworth is a town, more than just a castle and an Abbey ruin, and vernacular architecture reflects the townsfolk and their social history.

Conserving areas of note is a vital contribution to the recording of that social history for posterity."

A decision on whether to hold a consultation will be made on Wednesday July 28.
