Families from across Warwickshire are being encouraged to take part in the first family fay of Gypsy, Roma and traveller history and culture.
The event, which forms part of Gypsy Roma traveller history month, will take place at Warwickshire Police headquarters, Leek Wootton on Saturday (June 27).

It will run from 10am to 4pm and will feature an array of activities and displays including
:

  • Story telling with Garth Cartwright, award-winning author of Princes Amongst Men

  • Traditional Roma band and dancing display

  • Collection of traditional memorabilia

  • Children's arts workshop, graffiti project and competition prizes

  • Balloon race

  • Face painting, bouncy castle and Nintendo Wii games

  • Food and refreshments

Warwickshire Police Asst Chief Con Bill Holland also heads up the Association of Chief Police Officers, which is in charge of Gypsy and traveller issues.

He said: "This is set to be a really new and engaging event which we would welcome all members of our communities to attend.

"As well as having something on offer for everyone to enjoy, the event is a step in the right direction to improving relations between police and the travelling community.

"Unauthorised encampments have become a source of friction between police, Gypsies and travellers. We know education is at the heart of some of these contentious issues.

"Hopefully this day will be the start of building relationships with the aim to better understanding and learning about the different cultures and societies we all live in."
