Another Kenilworth town centre shop may fall victim to the recession - but has not gone yet.
Card chain Birthdays, which has a store employing four people in Warwick Road, was placed in administration on May 20 by its parent company Clinton Cards.

Nearby Woolworths store closed shortly before Christmas last year when the national chain we
nt bankrupt.

The Kenilworth branch of Birthdays, which also sells Thorntons confectionary, was still open for business this week. The company's administrators say they are hopeful of securing the company's future, despite admitting that it was unlikely to make a profit "in the near future".

A statement issued by administrators Zolfo Cooper said Birthdays had incurred trading losses for some time, and despite improving performance it still needed "significant" financial support from Clinton Cards, which continues to trade as normal.

Zolfo Cooper partner Peter Saville said: "Despite today's announcement, I would like to reassure customers that it is business as usual for Birthdays and we will be continuing to trade while we explore all options for the business.

"We remain hopeful of securing the future of the business despite the harsh trading environment being experienced by all retailers at present."

Thorntons, which is unaffected, has said it "notes with regret" that its trading partner had been placed in administration.
