200 new homes for derelict site in south Warwickshire village

A new estate for Bishops Itchington with 200 homes and a care home has been given initial approval by councillors at Stratford District Council.

Members of the council’s planning committee gave their consent to an outline planning application put forward by the St Francis Group for the scheme on derelict land at Harbury Cement Works.

As well as the homes and a 40-bed care home, the site, which is close to a Warwickshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, will include a doctor’s surgery.

In its application, the company stated: “The development will deliver 35 per cent affordable housing and an extra care unit, which will offer local housing and care options for an ageing population. The scheme will deliver a wide choice of high quality homes.

“A financial contribution will also be provided towards traffic calming measures within the village.”

The company also stated that 150 full-time jobs will be created at the site and pointed out that policies in both the district council’s Core Strategy and the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework state that re-using brownfield land is “much needed”.

Encouraging councillors to vote in favour of the scheme, council planning officer Gary Moss had said: “The provision of employment opportunities is an important component of the proposed development as it will provide the oppotunity for people to work close to where they live.”
