A drama and a book launch are set to highlight the history of Sydenham.

‘Sydni Tickle’ is a specially commissioned drama short to be performed at the SYDNI Centre next month. And ‘A Celebration of Sydenham’ is a new book on local history produced by the Sydenham History Group.

The drama (shortened version) will be part of the book launch event at the SYDNI Centre on Tuesday July 1 .

A full version of the drama will be staged at the big Sydenham 50th Anniversary celebration at the centre on Saturday July 5.

In Sydni Tickle (written by local writer Bev Murray and performed by Mindy Chillery of Golden Loom), the ghost of Joan Tickle visits the Sydenham estate, where she and her husband, Arthur, were farmers in the 1940s and 50s.

Joan has come to join in with the estate’s 50th anniversary celebrations and to reminisce about her time there. Fellow spirits join her.

All anchored in historical facts, this lively piece gives a fascinating and entertaining flavour of the stories contained in the new book.

‘A Celebration of Sydenham’ published by the history group is about history in unpromising places.

Nigel Briggs of Sydenham HistoryGroup said: “We hope that when you have read this book you will realise what an interesting and exciting story the area has to tell. The book launch event will include a presentation of the recent history of Sydenham and a visit from various characters from the past who will give us a ‘Sydni Tickle’ taster about their life and times.”

Books will be available during the evening at a special launch price of £4 (the normal price will be £4.95).

It will start at 7.30pm at the SYDNI Centre, Cottage Square, Sydenham,CV31 1PT
