In reply to your article in The Warwick Courier, dated Friday, April 25, 2008, Why are The Romany Gypsies still here? and I address that to "Corry Smith", "Henry Carroll", all "The young mothers", the individual who wishes to remain anonomous and the rest of the group / families of travellers.
Firstly, Travellers arrive unannounced without seeking approval from local communities and local authorities.

Secondly, They are well versed in the procedure of Trespass on land.

Thirdly, The land in question at present, St. Nicholas Park / M
yton Fields is land owned by Warwick District Council, entry and parking is subject to payment at the ticket machines provided. Which I hasten to add is what all local residents and visitors / tourists do when visiting the area.

Fourthly, There is absolutely nothing wrong with being decendent from this way of life and culture, something that many others may find attractive. We ourselves own a touring caravan and love nothing more than hitching up and taking off.

BUT WE;

1. Pay for our pitch and where required, water, shower usage, electricity, removal of refuse.

2. We do not let our two Labradors run freely through the campsite, barking and intimidating resident campers or through walkers.

3. We would always pick-up any dog faeces as this is a legal requirement and place in bins provided or ensure it is disposed of in the correct manner. Dog faeces can carry dangerous diseases which can also be contracted by humans, young children being most at risk of contamination. If you do not vaccinate your dogs many of these nasty diseases are killers.

4. We would never dream of leaving our pitch, or the campsite in a mess, depositing rubbish, food waste, dog faeces.

5. When visiting other towns, cities, villages and open countryside we contribute to the local community by visiting the local shops and pubs, intigrating into the local community, paying any entrance fees that may be required, paying any parking fees that may be required and leaving the area as we found it OR even enhancing the area.

6. We would never churn up ground laid to grass to such a degree that no one else can camp in that area, or even walk on the ground without slipping and sliding everywhere. Picnicking, sight-seeing or just sitting and admiring the lovely views.

So, to 'Corry Smith', Yes, individuals within your community are doing harm and commiting crime.

To 'Henry Carroll', Warwick town has a relatively low crime rate , with our local Police Service working hard to protect all local residents, which would extend to yourselves if you were in need. Burglary and theft is happening everywhere around the country as is drug usage, BUT it's not every day that a lovely, historic town such as Warwick, has a much loved open area of greenbelt destroyed by a passing travelling community, who will soon move on and leave us, the local towns people, along with the support of our council to put this mess right. A matter that, I hasten to add will cost money, which inevitably will come out of our council tax payments, something you do not contribute to wherever you go.

To 'The anonomous individual', You said, " We would like to stay until the weekend", so why are you still here? she added, " We all get tarred with the same brush. You get a gang like us who keep everything tidy" that's exactly what you appear to be, "A Gang", gangs are intimidating and not friendly, sometimes gangs can be quite threatening and you are not keeping everything tidy, we have seen the mess with our own eyes.

To 'young mothers', You know what to expect when you travel from place to place, if you are not prepared to contribute to the use of the local facilities, then you should not expect to be able to use them. Your priority should be education of your children to an acceptable level and teaching them how to appreciate thier surroundings, not to destroy it so others can no longer enjoy it.

I conclude, there is nothing wrong with living in caravans, it all sounds great to me but it would be fantastic if, rather than take from your environment you enhance it and leave something meaningful and of value which shows your appreciation of your stay in your chosen location.

I agree you are not hippies, some people choose to live in houses, caravans, static homes, tents, bungalows but we must all be responsible and make contributions in order to maintain our environment. Members of the Romany travellers are working in the area to provide for their families but for some reason feel they are exempt from paying any form of tax or utility payments, they use the facilities regardless.

It is this and all of the above issues that causes resentment from the local townsfolk, local authorities and any passing visitors / tourists. We want our "Beautiful Historic Warwick" back please and left in the same condition you found it.

Alison Kenton, local resident and dog walker
