Dancers, rappers and singers will be among those performing to raise money for an African village at a Kenilworth charity event.
More than 70 pupils will be taking part at the Urban and Swing nights at Kenilworth School in Leyes Lane to raise money for

The pupils, who attend the school and Castle Sixth Form have been organising the events since October and are hoping to raise more than £10,000 from the event.

The USU, which stands for Urban Sound Uyogo, was started four years ago by religious studies teacher Mohammed Nahal and a former pupil.

The Urban events next Wednesday and Thursday (March 12 and 13) will feature performances from pupils who will be singing and performing a number of different dance routines.

Katie Bolshaw has been working on the project after school since October.

She said: "It's a really good cause and if we can enjoy ourselves and help somebody at the same time that's a great thing to do."

The 16-year-old said the school, which has so far helped to provide a mother and baby clinic, educational equipment and water pumps to the village, is hoping to top last year's total of £7,000.

She added: "This year we are looking to raise £10,000 but if we can beat that it would be great."

As well as the performance evenings there is also a swing evening aimed at adults in the area.

The evening will start at 7.30pm next Friday (March 14) and provides less entertainment and more of a chance for adults to socialise.

Katie, who will be starting at Castle Sixth form in September believes more people should help charities.

She added: "I get a lot of enjoyment from it and it is a learning experience.

"Since we have been helping them I would have thought their lives have very much improved .

"We have been providing them with neccesities they didn't have before."

Tickets for the Urban nights cost £5 and tickets for the Swing night are £7 each. Both events start at 7.30pm. Call Mr Nahal on 859421.
