Political wars over questionnaire into Kenilworth’s future

A POLITICAL row has erupted over proposals set out in the town plan consultation.

The local Liberal Democrat party slammed many of the suggestions including to scrap the outdoor swimming pool and build a sports centre in its place.

In the newsletter, Kenilworth Mail, the party criticised the Conservative-led town council for suggestions warning of “traffic nightmare” in response to a one-way system on Warwick Road and questioned the future of the annual Round Table fireworks display if plans to reflood the castle mere get support.

The town council, which produced the questionnaire to find out what residents want to see in Kenilworth’s future, is made up of 17 members - 15 Conservative and two Liberal Democrats.

Council leader Norman Vincett spoke at their last meeting to express his disappointment that it had turned political.

In a personal statement, he said: “It is my aim to keep party politics out of the running of this council and treat everyone equally. So I was appalled and astonished at this newsletter.

“I hope not one member of this council was party to, or gave endorsement to that leaflet.

“There is no need for party politics. This consultation is a genuine attempt to hear the views of the town and I am really upset that it has been made political.

“Our town is worth more than that and residents have the ability to make up their own minds.

But hailing the row as a “storm in a teacup”, Cllr Pat Ryan (Lib Dem, Abbey) said he was stunned and that everyone should be entitled to have their say. “There are points which my party does not agree with and I can’t see anything wrong in expressing that,” he said.

“This is a democratic debate and people will make up their own minds. I don’t quite understand why they are so agitated at people campaigning for their viewpoints to be heard.”
