Ales Ahoy! Beer festival goes to sea

BEER drinkers can embark on a voyage to discover a range of 60 different nautically-themed ales at this year’s Harbury Beer Festival.

The event, which is organised by the Heart of England branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, takes place as usual at Harbury village hall on Friday and Saturday.

Running with the theme ‘Ale at Sea’, the festival will feature 60 beers which have a connotation with the sea in their names, as well as contenders in the strong bitters category of the West Midlands Beer of the Year award, which CAMRA members will be judging at the event.

John Crossling, of CAMRA’s Heart of England branch, said: “The idea started with marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

“We’ve now also got five of the village pubs on board - they’ll all be selling a beer from the Titanic Brewery in Staffordshire to join in with the festival. So when we close for two hours on the Saturday, there’s no need to go without beer.”

As well as beer, food - courtesy of the village hall committee and the Harbury Scouts group - will be available over the two days and on the Saturday, there will be entertainment by Hereburgh Morris during the lunch period and Time After Time in the evening.

The festival will be open from 5.30pm to 11.30pm on Friday August 31 and from 11.30am to 4pm and 6pm to 11.30pm on Saturday September 1.

Admission costs £10, which includes a refundable festival beer glass and beer tokens.
