Dear Lynda
You wrote recently that exercise can increase libido is there anything else you would recommend as I have no interest at all in being intimate and think I am becoming impotent. I am very stressed and busy at work so most evenings I just collapse into bed. My wife is upset with me, please help.
Lynda replies:
This is a very common problem that affects both men and women so don't beat yourself up it will only make matters worse.

Also do not rush for the Viagra or Cialis; it is my opinion that these drugs can be bad for health particularly if you are already on some form of medication and I am not convinced that women want hour long erections, they are looking for romance, tenderness and that magic element of fun.

Sex should not be taken too seriously. Dysfunctional sex seems to me to be big business for pharmaceutical companies but having a warm and tender relationship with or without sex should be prized above sexual performance.

After the age of 50 sexual performance in many men does decline. When we are first married or live with a partner 95 per cent of couples have sex at least once a month, many once or twice a day but, by the age of 70, only one man in four has an active sex life.

Unfortunately these days there is this huge expectation about many aspects of life and sexual prowess is no exception.

Sex is often a difficult subject to discuss but I think that the key for you is to discuss your feelings with your wife which will help her realise that you need a little more encouragement than when you were younger.

If you are feeling very stressed and tired then you need to address these issues too.

Also if there is underlying depression this will have an affect on libido.

Finding ways to relax and time to exercise will help with many aspect of your life while improving your overall health.

As for foods that help male sexual wellness oysters have long been associated with sexual performance because they contain high levels of zinc which is often low in men who have sexual dysfunction. Pumpkin seeds and pine nuts also provide a rich supply of zinc and oats have proteins and minerals needed to produce healthy seminal fluids.

Also beneficial are foods which contain ginger and cayenne pepper, these are warming herbs which increase circulation to the genitals.
Essential fatty acids are also important to men's sexual health; fats are the material from which the body produces hormones.

The best sources are oily fish, sesame seeds, almonds, spinach, and watercress. I always recommend an Omega 3 supplement which benefits the whole body.

I would also recommend Korean Ginseng which is a powerful stimulant which can work taken prior to lovemaking, or you could try X Action for Men which is a Ginseng and Saw Palmetto combination which contains zinc, chromium, iron, magnesium and other herbs known to boost male energy levels. See my website or email me for more details.

Loss of libido in women is often very different because sex for women is much more related to the mind than the body. As women age and oestrogen levels drop this can also affect their libido.

However, saying no to sexual advances with your partner can result in him feeling rejected which may ultimately cause him to exhibit symptoms of sexual dysfunction.

Women want to be wooed whether they are 19 or 90 which will without doubt improve their libido - sorry chaps in the bedroom it is generally up to you to get things moving in the right direction so start looking after your health today!
