All change for town's hotel business (February 2005)

Kenilworth has always its fair share of hotels, restaurants and pubs but the scene has changed dramatically in the last decade.

The Abbey Hotel at the top of Abbey Hill. The hotel has now been converted into apartmentsHere are three old photographs of popular 20th century venues - only one of which remains. The first shows Kenilworth Hall Hotel, formerly in Rosemary Hill.

It and the other pictures are for sale at The Picture Shop in The Square, in Helen Scott's collection.

Owner Jonathan Hargreaves said: "Kenilworth Hall was a high class hotel in its day. It has been turned into flats now. I can't remember when it was converted but it must have been quite a place - there's a magnificent conservatory in the picture and some super cars."

The Kenilworth Hall Hotel in Rosemary Hill, which has also been converted into flatsHe believes the shot dates back to the 1950s.

The others were taken earlier, around the turn of the century.

Mr Hargreaves said: "The Abbey Hotel was on the corner at the top of Abbey Hill. It is also apartments now - perhaps that's a sign of the times.

The Clarendon Arms in Castle Hill, though the photograph labels it New Row"The Clarendon Arms is still there today but this picture locates it in New Row. That's strange because I can't imagine the road name has changed - maybe they got it wrong."
