Leek Wootton Air Rifle Club
These men are members of an early 20th century Leek Wootton air rifle club. The photograph, sent in to us by the village history group, is the official image of the Leek Wootton A.R.C Champions 1908 to 1909 for the Warwick A.R League.
History group member Lesley Eldridge believes A.R.C stands for Air Rifle Cluib, given the guns in the picture. On the back row are Christopher Corby, former gamekeeper at Woodcote, farmer Ernest Cattell of The Elms, C Holmes, H Weston, W Golby and head gardener at Wootton Court John Huckvale. At the front are J Timmins, James Roberts who was master at Leek Wootton school, G Preece, J Slee, H Chapman and E Summerton. Ms Eldridge said: “The Summerton family was the last to own and run Guy’s Cliffe Mill, and they ran a grocer’s and general store at Stone Cottage in Warwick Road - now known as the old post house.”
